Patrick R. Burns focuses his practice on representation of franchisees, dealers and distributors in disputes relating to all aspects of their relationships with their franchisors, manufacturers and suppliers. Prior to joining Dady & Gardner, Patrick was the Vice President of the American Arbitration Association’s Minneapolis Regional Office and had also worked as a trial lawyer in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). He is a Minnesota Rule 114 qualified neutral and has served as counsel for clients in numerous mediations and arbitrations. Patrick is on the American Arbitration Association’s national panel of mediators and arbitrators. He also regularly volunteers as a mediator through the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights and Hennepin County District Court.
Minnesota Law & Politics magazine recently named Patrick to its 2010 Super Lawyers "Rising Stars" list. Minnesota Lawyer named Patrick one of twenty “Up and Coming Lawyers” in the state in 2007. He is licensed to practice law in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and before the United States Courts of Appeal for the 7th and 8th Circuits, the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Army Court of Criminal Appeals, and the United States District Courts for the Districts of Minnesota and South Dakota.
Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Public Administration and Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota, where he is an adjunct professor of law. USD has honored him with the “Dillon Graduate Achievement Award.” Patrick is a graduate of the Judge Advocate General’s School of the Army in Charlottesville, Virginia and the United States Army Airborne Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Patrick is an active member of the American Bar Association, including the ABA Forum on Franchising, the Hennepin County Bar Association, and the Minnesota State Bar Association’s ADR Section (where he serves on the Executive Council and as Vice Chair of Publications). He frequently presents at seminars on alternative dispute resolution. On a pro bono basis, Patrick represents a Vietnam veteran recently diagnosed as having long-term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in appeals before both the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
Patrick is a Barrister in the Douglas K. Amdahl Inn of Court and a graduate of the Hennepin County Bar Association’s LINC program (Leaders Impacting the Non-profit Community). He is very active in Rotary International, serving as a youth exchange coordinator. He also serves, by appointment, on the Victory Memorial Drive Revitalization Taskforce in Minneapolis.
Patrick resides in Minneapolis with his wife, Paula, and their three children, Liam, Finnian and Fiona. Patrick enjoys refereeing rugby at all levels and maintains a national referee ranking from USA Rugby. He has been involved in the sport of rugby as a player, coach, administrator and referee since spending a year in Australia as a high school exchange student. Patrick has since traveled in more than 25 countries.
