On behalf of everyone at Dady & Gardner, P.A., we want to wish you all a very Happy New Year. As we now enter this next decade, we wanted to warn you of a potential issue that has recently gained some media attention.
The year 2020 inherently lends itself to potential problems when abbreviated. As an example, suppose you and a third party agreed that a payment was due to you on March 5, 2020, but you only wrote out the date as 3/5/20. Someone could easily manipulate that date to appear as something different (and potentially harmful), for example, 3/5/2021, by simply adding more numbers after the “20.” So, was the payment due on 3/5/2020 or 3/5/2021?
To avoid unnecessary confusion, and to protect yourself from potential legal issues in the future, make it a New Year’s Resolution to write out the year portion of the dates in full.
