How important is industry knowledge when starting a franchise?

On Behalf of | Oct 31, 2024 | Buying A Franchise

There are franchise opportunities available in everything from oil change facilities and restaurants to automotive dealerships and home services companies. Some entrepreneurs contemplating a franchise opportunity have previously worked in the specific industry in question. For example, someone who has helped manage a restaurant might find the idea of opening a franchise location of a popular chain restaurant very appealing. Other times, people recognize that they have an opportunity to start all business based on a franchisor’s marketing or popularity in the local community. They may not have much experience in that particular industry.

Is it necessary for a franchisee to have direct experience in a particular industry for their franchise to succeed?

Franchisors typically offer training

Prior experience can make it easier to successfully operate a franchise, but it is not mandatory for success. Franchisors typically provide extensive training to those who invest in a franchise opportunity as part of the start-up process. Typically, the owner and any managers that they hire receive extensive training.

The company may even offer training for individual employees during the startup stage of the franchise by sending out a regional trainer. That way, a lack of experience and knowledge on the part of the franchisee does not prevent the franchise from opening successfully and offering products or services that align with the company’s established brand standards.

It is often possible to overcome a lack of direct professional experience in a particular sector with the training provided by the franchisor. Training can include everything from how the company operates and the basics of employment law to the basics of the industry itself.

That being said, in franchise scenarios involving a lot of specialized knowledge and initial investment, independent research and education are often important as well. After all, franchisers likely can’t provide robust training on every aspect of running a car dealership, for example. Some owners can overcome their lack of personal experience by hiring managers and other workers with extensive experience.

Evaluating different franchise opportunities and reviewing company policies – with a skilled legal team – to verify the quantity and quality of training available can help those planning to invest in a business endeavor protect their resources. Franchise opportunities can make entrepreneurship accessible to those with different levels of experience and training, but selecting the right opportunity is still crucial for long-term success.
